11/11/2023 0 Comments Use ntlite to strip down windows 7![]() When you're done (and you can be pretty ruthless), you'll have a new Windows installation disc that you can use to install the lighter, gutted version of Windows. Build a Lightweight Windows Install with nLiteįreeware Windows application nLite goes directly into your Windows installation disc and helps you selectively rip out all the features and software you don't want. In my examples I'll be explaining how I used the freeware applications nLite and GameXP to optimize my Windows installation for fast performance in a limited environment, like a VMware virtual machine. Whatever your reasons for wanting a lightweight Windows install, I'm going to focus on a couple of methods for shrinking Windows XP below. A slimmed down Windows install is also appealing for the performance gains it affords, because it allows your computer to allocate more memory and resources to individual programs rather than the operating system as a whole. In fact, your hardware doesn't even have to be that bad to still enjoy benefits of this process. On the other hand, a lightweight Windows install is also perfect for older hardware that just can't keep up with XP. That means that the virtual machine will run more quickly and take up fewer resources on my Mac. I happen to want a super-lightweight version of Windows to run on VMware Fusion on my Mac, so I can run my must-have Windows applications without allocating a lot of hard drive space or memory to the virtual machine. There are a lot of reasons you might be interested in lightening up and streamlining a Windows installation. Let's take a look at a few ways to trim down your Windows installation so that it takes up less space on your hard drive and eats less RAM while it's running. Luckily, whether you want to put Windows on a diet in a virtual machine or you want to get Windows up and running all snappy-like on older hardware, you've got a handful of excellent and free options at your disposal. Other times, you don't want the default, bloated Windows installation, with every single built-in feature slowing you down. Most of the time, you want the best from your operating system, including all the bells and whistles. If you get any errors try to install the programs after using NTLite doing the audit mode, installs, sysprep and capture process a second time.Click to viewWhen you're installing Windows in a virtual machine or on old, slow hardware, you want the leanest, meanest and fastest-running configuration possible. Installing the programs before or after using NTLite is up to you. Now use the install.wim generated for removals with NTLite. After capturing don't forget to disconnect the mapped disk. Uncheck the option "Open drive in Windows Explorer." otherwise an error will occur. After the sysprep and shutdown of the VM close VMware and run it again but as Administrator (very important!!!) and map the OS partition. You can use VMware Workstation Pro to install the ISO in audit mode and make sysprep then capture the image. NTLite can generate this autounattend.xml for you. Alternatively you can use an autounattend.xml file copied to the ISO root. To enter Audit mode press CTRL+SHIFT+F3 on the OOBE screen (first interactive screen after copying the files). The capture can be done with GImageX, ImageX or Dism. It is not necessary to use the unattend switch for sysprep. ![]() Ideally install the updated Windows 7 ISO in Audit mode to finish pending operations install NET4.8 do the sysprep then capture the image. If you got this far thanks for your patience. All of this just for a custom Windows 7 install with pre installed. Its not easy without knowing the correct terminology to use and what I am trying to say. ![]() Sorry for making it difficult to understand. Never got to the point where ImageX comes out to play can I use a Recovery boot disc with cmd? for Win PEĤ. How do I make the wim to use with sysprep?ģ. I want to try and Perceiver in hope that I can learn something new HA! well I can live in hope.ġ.When would I use NTLite to thin things down a little?Ģ. ![]() Never got to GimageX thought about launching laptop but chose not to. This is the part where the hit the fan, whatever had been created had just been wiped out on bootup Sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:C:\unattend.xml I have Windows 7 Pro 圆4 with security updates, NET4.8 along with some other small installed programs in VMWare. What I am trying to do, if anyone can help in laymans terms would be appreciated. GImageX Sysprep from a virtual machine image to bootable Windows 7 install disc A ton of searches on the net has just about made me give up. Try as I have to get my head around this over the past several days. ![]()
